Just a thought, fellow Cagleite, I am new to the group as well. If I could offer a suggestion it’s to know your audience and temper your opinion accordingly. Sometimes we have to be greeting card artists as Daryl suggests, but we should never surrender or be cowed to use our talent to comfort the afflicted. Satire is needed more than ever today.
Thank you so much for your comment... it's so wonderful to connect with another Cagleite.
That's the thing... from what I understand, the Cagle audience is so large that it seems difficult to me to pin down who my audience is. And how does it break down? How many have X political allegiance, and what are their tastes in cartoons in terms of tone and voice? How do you infer things when you don't get direct content feedback? And how are editors responding or not to their readers?
Reprint data just doesn't seem like enough to inform educated decisions. It seems like the best way to approach success is to copy what others are doing, which is either neutral on Trump or apolitical. I'm so eager to hear your perspective.
I guess in these times of fear and retribution funny stuff catches people’s eyes, and that’s why editors love it. It might sound a bit out there to even mention it, but if satire keeps getting shut down, we can look to cartoonists in oppressive countries for inspiration. They know how to cleverly critique things without getting too direct. Instead of targeting politicians head-on, they focus on bigger issues, using humor to point out the ridiculousness around them. It’s a smart way to get people thinking without stirring up too much trouble!
I’m glad this cartoon hit the “sweet spot” on the syndication platform—and there’s more where that came from. And I’m sure this one will continue to “have legs” & find new audiences. I like your formula for trusting your instincts and still continuing to create political-themed cartoons/OpEds/late night TV monologues/in whatever media you choose. These times demand the very best hard hitting speak-truth-to-power work you can create. You already have the life experience, the wisdom, and the creative talent to give voice to what so many people are only dreaming they had the courage to speak up about. Big historical moments like these are made for your boldness, & your audience will continue to find you.
Bring back Francis the Talking Mule and nobody gets hurt. Let’s kick some maga A$$. [Editors Note: Dems — you either kick ass or you’ll be maga stew. You choose.]
